]]> NOUVELLES - DIAMONDS & PLASTIC IN STORES NOW Mon, 23 May 2011 00:00:00 -0500 Diamonds & Plastic est le troisième album d’Ian Kelly. Plusieurs ont connu l’auteur-compositeur-interprète montréalais grâce à son album précédent, Speak Your Mind, qui vient d’être certifié or au Canada (40 000 ventes) il y a quelques semaines, plus de deux ans après sa parution à l’automne 2008.

Diamonds & Plastic est un peu moins mélancolique queSpeak Your Mind – le premier extrait “I Would Have You” a un ton presque humoristique, rigolo, alors que “Parliament”, qui semble arriver à point dans notre paysage politique actuel, a, quant à elle, du mordant. C’est en partie dû, selon l’artiste, au fait que l’album soit son premier album enregistré avec un band. Ian a joué plus de 100 concerts depuis la parution de Speak Your Mind et il lui semblait tout à fait naturel de continuer à travailler avec les gars du groupe pour l’enregistrement des nouvelles chansons. « On a enregistré l’album au cours de l’automne avec les musiciens qui m’accompagnaient sur la route, Jon Day aux claviers et Mark Nelson à la batterie, auxquels s’est ajouté, le temps de l’enregistrement, Guillaume Chartrain à la basse. On était installés dans un chalet dans les Laurentides, où on se retrouvait en début de semaine, puisqu’on était tous en tournée la plupart des week-ends.”Ian Kelly a encore une fois réalisé lui-même son album ; il en signe chacune des 13 chansons sauf une, “White Wedding”. Sur cette pièce, comme dans plusieurs autres sur l’album, on peut entendre encore une fois, Jozy Fever aux chœurs. “Elle a la plus belle voix que j’ai  jamais entendue”, dit le réalisateur. 

En plus de ses collaborateurs réguliers, Kelly a fait appel à quelques invités, comme les guitaristes Rick Haworth, au pedal-steel et au banjo, et Didace Grondin au lapsteel et à la guitare électrique. Le batteur Robbie Kuster fait également un caméo à l’égoïne sur “At All Costs”. C’est à Jon Day, qui a été sur la route avec Ian pendant plus de deux ans, que l’artiste a confié le travail d’arrangement de cordes sur Diamonds & Plastic. Ayant carte blanche, Jon a choisi de mettre en scène deux quatuors, et d’aller les enregistrer aux magnifiques studios du département de musique de l’Université McGill. Pour Kelly, c’est dans “Workday”, aux accents d’“Eleanor Rigby”, que l’on peut entendre au mieux, le travail de Jon Day.

Ian Kelly présentera Diamonds & Plastic, lors du lancement qui aura lieu le mercredi 25 mai à partir de 17h30 au Théâtre Rialto (5723 Avenue du Parc, Montreal).

Many came around to knowing the Montreal-based singer-songwriter with his previous album, Speak Your Mind, which was just certified gold in Canada (40,000 units sold), a few weeks back, more than two years after its launch in the Fall of 2008.

Diamonds & Plastic is a bit more upbeat than Speak Your Mind - lead-off single “I Would Have You”is positively giddy (and a bit droll) and the timely political anthem “Parliament” has quite the kick to it; this, says the singer-songwriter, is partly inspired by the fact that this is his first album recorded with a band. He’s done some 100 gigs since the launch of Speak Your Mind and it seemed only natural to bring the boys in the band along to record the new songs. So, while still on tour on weekends, Ian and his usual two sidemen – keyboard whiz Jon Day and drummer Mark Nelson – were joined by bassist Guillaume Chartrain, in a rented cottage literally right next to Ian's home up north in the Laurentians, for most of the recording in the Fall of 2010.

Kelly produced this album on his own again; writing all 13 songs safe for one, “White Wedding”. On it, and many other tracks, you can hear return collaborator Jozy Fever who was definitely in Ian’s plans for the studio from the start, “she has the best voice I have ever heard”, says Kelly. To add to the mix, Ian called in a few key guests, including guitar players Rick Haworth for some evocative pedal-steel and banjo lines and Didace Grondin on lapsteel and electric guitars. Also on the album, a surprising saw cameo by usually-known-as-drummer, Robbie Kuster on “At All Costs”. Jon Day, who toured with Kelly for the past 2 and a half years, took care of the elaborate string arrangements on this album, booking two string quartets to be recorded at the McGill music department’s state-of-the-art studio, which you can hear to best effect on the “Eleanor Rigby”-esque “Workday”.

Ian Kelly launches the album with a performance at the Rialto Theatre (5723 Avenue du Parc, Montreal)Wednesday, May 25th as of 5h30 p.m.

It's getting harder and harder to choose wisely what will end up on our table. I personally decided to stop eating Industrial meat more than a year ago. I still eat some, I guess I must have had free range chicken from a local farm twice this past year. I still eat fish but again, not any fish. I want to try to make good choices and participate in making the supplies last and encourage sustainable fishing. Farm raised doesn't mean environmentally friendly nor healthy. Here’s a sad news for everybody who came to an Ian Kelly concert in the past 2 years; Jon Day is not in my band anymore. We appreciated him very much but he decided to fend for himself and concentrate on his own musical project. I think it’s a very wise decision, Jon’s music is amazing and for him and for all of us potential listeners, it’s better this way, I really want to put my hands, and my ears, on a new Jon Day album soon. Après plus d’une centaine de spectacles à travers le Canada et l’Europe, dont bon nombre d’entre eux à guichets fermés, la tournée Speak Your Mind prendra fin demain, samedi 12 mars à Montréal au Théâtre Corona. Le spectacle affichait complet cette semaine mais 50 nouveaux billets ont été émis jeudi matin pour permettre aux plus de gens possible d’assister au spectacle. Ian Kelly ne nous fera pas attendre très longtemps, car le 24 mai prochain il lancera son 3e album. Comme il l’a fait pour ses 2 premiers opus, il en signe la réalisation. Le premier extrait radio I Would Have You se fait déjà entendre sur les ondes.]]> This morning, singer-songwriter Ian Kelly received confirmation that his second album Speak Your Mind, launched more than two years ago, is certified gold for 40,000 units sold in Canada. The whole team at Audiogram wants to congratulate Ian for his perseverance and determination. Kudos Ian! There’s a lot to be proud of!

Kelly will be on stage this Saturday at Corona Theater in Montreal to perform the last of over 100 concerts in Canada and Europe as part of his Speak Your Mind tour. Many of these performances were sold out, as was this week’s Montreal date, but Thursday promoters issued 50 additional tickets to offer as many people as possible one last chance to see Kelly’s current tour. Ian Kelly won’t keep his fans waiting long as his upcoming 3rd album will hit the streets on May 24th. As was the case with his last two records, Kelly is producing this third one. The first single I Would Have You is already making its way on radio charts.

A 20-min set in the daytime at 2PM in the congress hall (Le Palais) and one 40-min set in the evening at 8PM at Morrisson's Pub. Ian is one of 5 artists selected by CIMA to participate in this Canadian Blast, along with Maylee Todd, Jill Barber, Saidah Baba Talibah and Art Of Fresh. As soon as he gets back, Ian will be heading to Quebec City to take part in the 1st Winter Summit put together by the David Suzuki Foundation. Ian will be performing at the Gala Dinner held in honour of Dr. Suzuki's 75th birthday. Last but not least, Ian's 3rd album is coming. It will be May. Tracking should be done this week before the departure for Midem on Sunday.
